MLS Outside the Bench Work
Let me start with a simple question: When you hear “Medical Laboratory Science,” what is the first thing that comes to your mind? A microscope? Test tubes? Reagents? Or perhaps a scientist sitting behind a laboratory bench all day?
As an MLS student myself, I have come to realise that Medical Laboratory Science is much bigger than what happens inside the laboratory. The bench is where we build our foundation, but it does not have to define the limits of our careers.
Today, I want us to look beyond the bench and recognise the many possibilities that exist for us as MLS professionals. Our training can take us into research, public health, molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, clinical research, quality assurance, laboratory management, health technology, medical sales and applications, health data analysis, regulatory affairs, medical writing, consultancy, teaching, and entrepreneurship.
Imagine an MLS graduate developing diagnostic solutions, working with a biotechnology company, contributing to public health programmes, analysing healthcare data, educating the next generation of scientists, or even building their own healthcare business. These are not careers outside our field; they are opportunities that our field can prepare us for.
So, as students, we should not limit ourselves to asking, “Which laboratory will I work in after graduation?” We should also ask, “What else can I do with the knowledge, skills, and scientific mindset I am gaining?”
Because the truth is simple: the laboratory bench is our starting point, not our stopping point.
We are MLS students, but our possibilities extend far beyond the bench.
