Now it’s time to leave camp and then reality Starts to set in because for the three weeks spent in a regimented environment you will have no idea what is really going on the country.
First of all the last day of camp comes with several emotions, on one hand corpers will find out what PPA (place of primary assignment) they are been posted to and everyone wanted to be posted to the city not some village, so when you open your PPA letter and you discover you have been posted to the city you start to feel like a king and start to raise your shoulder 😆. That was my fate even without trying to influence my placement.
Then came the cost of living in the city.
From sorting for rent , to cost of transportation.
Reality started to set in when I heard the cost of transportation from camp to the capital where my PPA was located, keep in mind I had no idea where I was going to spend the night I just boarded the bus. On getting to the capital fortunately they were Christian fellowship such as Nigerian Christian corpers fellowship (NCCF), Winner Corpers Fellowship and so on that were on ground to accommodate new Corp Members. I had to go for NCCF where I will be spending the whole of my service year.
The next day I visited my PPA in order to get my acceptance letter which I will take to the local government to fully register as a corp member.
My PPA was a Hospital with all necessary departments required of a standard hospital. The only issue I had as at that time was I had never made use of an automated analyzer for Hematology or Chemistry testing but I was lucky enough to be trained for a month on how to make use of it.
It was a whole experience because 2 months before I got to my PPA the only Scientist working in the laboratory had already left so I was trained by a part time scientist who also left when they were certain I could handle the major test well enough. From there onwards it was full time Experience which includes 8a-5pm every weekdays, sometimes i can be called upon on Saturday to come over to run a test and my transportation will be paid for and also giving a stipend. Then of course management meeting in which I have to be present as the main Scientist and then Presentations, Outreach. I did all this for a full service year . I was been paid 50k/ month by my PPA and 33k/ month by federal government. Three months before the end of my service year the Nysc allowance by federal government was increased to 77k.
My service was full of ups and downs
But I’m grateful for the experience and the people I met along the way.
With this we have come to the end of My Nysc journey. Let me know in the comment section if you have any questions or contributions
O da Bo!!!
