Securing An Internship As A MLS Graduate(My Personal Experience)

Being an Intern was a full time job a proper 9-5 job. I entered the system as a Beginner scientist 👨🔬 having a bit of knowledge from my posting days, to becoming top scientist. I realized that being a medical laboratory scientist is beyond the walls of the laboratory , here are some of the few things I learnt:
I learnt how to relate with other health professionals in the hospital settings not only for the benefit of the patient (which is the number one priority) but also for your own benefit. For example due to the relationship I had with my colleagues in the dentist department I got a free teeth cleaning 🦷 😆 i also learnt to reciprocate such when the need arises.
I learnt how to deal with difficult patients 🤒 , this set of patients will test your patience especially when you have a long queue of them to deal with. Even when you feel too tired from working on a lot of samples( trust me when I say 8 out of 10 of your working days as an intern will be filled with a lot of work especially if you’re been posted to a busy hospital.) you still have to visit that reception with a smile to reassure them that we’re still going attend to them.
I learnt how to work with my colleagues and technicians in the laboratory settings, you will always need their help especially on days where you have a busy morning shift so they can compile your left over samples with their evening shift samples. ( also for gist and updates 😆)
I learnt how to be an extrovert, by the time work place politics starts to come into play you would have to start engaging people for your advantage.
I learnt discipline from waking up early, to been diligent in carrying out duties because their is no room for errors when it comes to working with human samples, my communication skills became better, and my knowledge of our profession became better just by showing up everyday
Things I realized during my internship days
Not all health professionals want your interest at heart, some just want to always find fault in whatever you do, recognize this set of individuals and treat them accordingly.
Dress smartly, speak based on fact not assumptions it’s okay not to know and do your research later .
Do not engage in conversations with people that speak ill of others because when you’re not around you will be subject of the discussion also.
And make sure you’re teachable and learn to ask questions.
Learn how to manage your relationship with your partner because this profession will test your relationship especially on days when you’re too tired to have a conversation after your working hours.
There are some money making updates in the laboratory settings (tight settings 😂 if you know you know). Leave a comment in the comments section if you want to learn about this update.
And that’s all on this episode. I have to go outside to enjoy the remaining hours of this public holiday before work resumes tomorrow. Till the next episode Ka ọ dị.
